This week, I met with RADS staff members about digitization and the library’s periodicals. It was fascinating to get a sense of the various processes and procedures that catalogers follow to try to keep the information about an item as consistent as possible across platforms and the considerations that go into whether or not to digitize an item at all. Similarly, my trip to the periodicals shelves highlighted the immense amount of work that goes into finding (or, sometimes, making) enough room to store all of the items that come in on a regular basis.
I also had the opportunity to attend an alumni panel hosted by the Career Center, which provided an interesting look into applying experiences had and skills learned at Carleton in a post-Carleton career. In particular, I found the panelists’ discussions about embracing how their goals changed over time to be very insightful. Obviously I’m not post-Carleton yet, but I know I will be sooner rather than later, and the future can feel intimidating. It’s nice to have the knowledge that others have successfully navigated that transition, and that even if things do change, or there are roadblocks, there are ways to adapt and make the best of it.
